Posted By : Mike D Posted : 8/7/2009 Comments : For the next match between Jackie Chan and Pat Morita, I give it to Jackie easily. First off, Pat Morita wasn't even trained in the martial arts before The Karate Kid, all that he knew for the movie was from a few months of one on one sessions with the film's instructor. His skills were mediocre at best. Jackie Chan however studied numerous forms of Wushu and is a tremendous athlete and stuntman as demonstrated in his movies. Jackie Chan wins this no contest.
Posted By : El Capitan (James) Posted : 8/4/2009 Comments : To Mike G, if I recall correctly, Steven Seagal dies fairly early in Executive Decision, a Kurt Russell movie. I'm pretty sure he falls from a plane as it's flying, though I'm not sure the exact situation in which he dies.
Posted By : Mike D Posted : 7/31/2009 Comments : To continue the Van Damme vs Seagal debate, I found out that the two actually did almost have a real life confrontation back in 1996 at a party at Sylvester Stallone's house. There's a YOUTUBE video about it if you type in Seagal vs Van Damme its pretty interesting.
Posted By : Mike G ( mikeg@choicemartialartsacademy.com)
Posted : 7/30/2009 Comments : I agree with everyone on Van Damme demolishing Seagal. I cite everyone elses reasons listed above, thanks for saving me time for actually coming up with a reason other than that I cant stand steven seagal movies. At El Capitan, which movie did steven seagal die in? I don't recall him ever actually getting hurt in a movie, which is partially why I never liked him or his movies, unrealistic and boring.
Posted By : El Capitan (James) Posted : 7/29/2009 Comments : I've got my money on Van Damme. Having extensive experience in Shotokan, Tae Kwan Do and Muay Thai is one thing, but when you consider that he is in great physical condition ( even in his most recent straight to video films ), versus Seagal's lack-there-of, it's hard to picture Van Damme losing.
Plus... Seagal died in one of his movies, Van Damme never did.
Posted By : The Small Guy Posted : 7/27/2009 Comments : Van Damme won the Kumite(sp?). He would crush Seagal.
Posted By : Mike D Posted : 7/22/2009 Comments : For the debate between Van Damme vs Seagal, I think its safe to say Van Damme takes it easy. Van Damme is a black belt in Shotokan Karate with training in Taekwondo and Muay Thai. His kicks are second to none in the movie world and his hand striking is also good. Seagal is a 7th dan in Aikido as I remember reading somewhere, but Aikido is a purely self defense art, relying on exaggerated, uncontrolled movements to make the techniques work. There's no chance Seagal would be able to take Van Damme down when he throws a side kick right to his face. There's also the other factor of Van Damme being in incredible physical condition and Seagal looking like a fat mess in most of his movies. Van Damme all the way!

Posted : 6/21/2009 Comments : Continuing the discussion on what is the best form of martial arts for self defense; I'm curious, could we technically include the form of combat that is taught to the military? Whether it be the Marines, Army, Green Berets, etc. Because they are taught to fight and survive in a war zone in which anything could happen. With that in mind, I'm willing to pit whatever they learn against a combo of Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu as the most reliable or best form of self defense.

Posted By : Sensei Steve Posted : 5/24/2009 Comments : I think we all can conclude that the BEST martial arts style would be a combination of muay thai and jiu jitsu. As seen from the UFC and other major MMA organizations, these two disciplines have proven to be the most effective time in and time out. However, if you had to put Sensei Steve on the spot and ask which single discipline would be the most effective, I would say muay thai.

Posted By : Mike D Posted : 5/18/2009 Comments : To continue Mike G's response to what martial art is best for self defense, I'll agree that Muay Thai is very practical, but I think that a mixed martial arts system like the one taught at our school is the most beneficial. By studying multiple styles and arts I think your better able to understand body movements, which in turn makes you more able to defend and react in various situations with various opponents. How do you defend against a grab at the wrist, or the arm, or the neck? How about a punch or kick to the head, body, or legs? No one martial art is complete so it is important to study as much as you can to make yourself more well-rounded.
Posted By : MikeG ( mikeg@choicemartialartsacademy.com)
Posted : 5/14/2009 Comments : Which martial arts style is the best you say? Well I feel most comfortable with boxing for obvious reasons but in my humble(and factual!)opinion Muay Thai would be the most practical martial art to know for self defense, as you can strike with just about every point of your body effectively, not just your fists. They may not know the grappling techniques but Thai fighters are right at home in a clich and in a street situation if somebody is grabbing or holding you, thers a good chance the Muay Thai practitioner will know how to counter or work within these confines. Also legs are longer than arms so he can keep thugs back with his deadly kiccks.

Posted : 4/28/2009 Comments : bin. His surgery was much more then we anticiptted. He had a piece of bone removed from his leg as well as a growth from the same area. He was in a lot of pain for a few days, to a point he has to be put on Morphaine the day after the surgery.
He is currently on crutches and will remain so for another few weeks. His Doctor said he will be out of Karate for minimum of 6 months, up to a year till the bone heals. He will be back teaching in a few weeks, but he is to have no contact, especially with his left leg.
He really misses Karate and all of his Karate Buddies

Posted By : The Shrek Posted : 3/3/2009 Comments : Everyone keeps saying you need to hydrate but isn't coffee's main ingrediant water????? I don't drink coffee hate the taste, but I do use energy drinks and certain caffeen stimulants. These items used in moderation can be benificial. I'm not saying live off the stuff but in moderation can be useful. I do believe plenty of water throughout the day is VERY important. Theres a studys that say a glass of wine a day is great for the heart, but too much and you have some serious health issues. The real problem is the sugar and sugar additives that become the major issues. That's where people need to watch a Rockstar Regular energy drink has the same sugar content as 7 1/2 rice crispy treats. They sell sugar free with just the caffeen and vitamins (Yes if you've never had one they are packed with good vitamins). I personally get headaches and feel run down after a Regular Rockstar wears off but the sugar free Rockstar I drink and feel great and it doesn't seem to make me sluggish after the caffeen leaves the body. Someone said Gatorade, Vitamin Water, or Juice (Even alot of the Organic) I just ask Read the back label look at sugar and Calories in one bottle then go look at a Sugar Free energy drink or what a coffee black or Tea Straight (NO SUGAR) would be I think you'd be shocked at what you see! I know I was. Again you can't live off the stuff, but once it awhile not bad. You can live forever on water!!!!! Anyway that's the just the opion of a SHREK. :)
Posted By : Mike G Posted : 3/3/2009 Comments : B-vitamins are water soluble for the most part, so even in high dosages if you are hydrated properly and drink water your body will use what it needs and flush the rest.
Posted By : Mike G Posted : 3/3/2009 Comments : Caffeine is an addictive substance and is unhealthy in high dosages. I drink tea as opposed to coffee it has a better balance of caffeine and a natural antagonist of caffeine so the effects are more moderate and relaxing as opposed to strung out and speeding as if you were to receieve the caffeine from coffee. Energy drinks in general are not healthy like Mike said the prolonged intake of b-vitamins can cause nerve damage but if you work out a lot and your body uses what you put into it you shouldn't have to worry so much. Just be more moderate and resist using substances to enhance your work out if you can but if your feeling sluggish and you feel like your lacking something take a vitamin maybe drink half a coffee(go for the tea I'm telling you!) so your dosage of caffeine and other stimulative chemicals is low thus reducing the negative effects. Eat Vitamins.
Posted By : Mike DiNicola Posted : 3/2/2009 Comments : I didn't read the article but from reading the other message board posts it seems that the debate is if coffee or energy drinks are a good thing to consume during training. From my own experiences and knowledge, water is the way to go. Caffeine in coffee can dehydrate the body further and consuming a hot beverage during training while sweating doesn't seem to make much sense. Energy drinks are horrible for you in more ways then Linda stated with irregular heartbeats, the prolonged consumption of B-vitamins in energy drinks can cause damage to the nervous system to the point where hands and feet constantly shake. Gatorade or vitamin water are good to consume because the simple carbs in them allow for an energy boost, but these drinks are usually heavy in calories. My best advice is drink some juice or eat some fruit before training for an energy boost, and drink water during to hydrate.
Posted By : Linda ( LostracL@einstein.edu)
Posted : 3/2/2009 Comments : I agree with Debbie - need to hydrate with water. Drinking just coffee, in my opinion is not the healthier way to go. See excerpts below which are really geared towards those under 21 years of age, except the last site.
http://kidshealth.org/teen/drug_alcohol/drugs/caffeine.html
Taken from Independent Press 2/11/09
"Mr. Krieger said that he is concerned with young people consuming large quantities of these drinks (e.g., Red Bull). The other reason for his concern is that energy drinks are often used before sporting events. High dosages of caffeine have been linked to abnormal heart rhythms and nausea."
Then there's this site that speaks to working out and ethics, legality, doping, nutritional value, etc. I guess it's all what one wants to get out of their workout and what you want to teach others. Again, it reiterates affects on one's heart - and mixed with exercise that could be a double-edged sword.

I recently finished up my first year at the school and would like to thank the instructor staff for outstanding training. By far a great experience meeting and training with all of the other students!! I look forward to year two.
I skimmed the coffee article. But I always believed coffee had no nutritional value. It may give a "boost" short term during performace, but I don't see how it can feed long term muscle growth.
